Hello everyone. I todays post, I have been looking at workflow around my mixing desk. I don’t have much in the way of budget which is why I use the Soundcraft Mixers. They offer fantastic bang per buck for sound. For automation and other features, you need to splash more cash which I don’t have. Therefore, I decided I needed a better way of recording my settings per project.
I’m not happy with photos or notes, I decided to build my own note taking system which lets me dial in the settings as I can see them on the mixer and the save them inside my DAW for recall. I keep everything in one place! Lovely. To go further, I decided go further an build an EQ utility to help me get rough visiuals on what the actual EQ is doing for more precise dialling in. Woah I hear you say – you should be using your ears for this and that’s one of the key points of an analogue workflow. Good point but as regular readers know, I have hearing loss and some blind spots. I then need to build visual tools to help me understand and see what is going on in the ranges where my ear does not work. I also like the workflow of plugins like Fabfilter ProQ which I can use at speed.

Here is the wonderfull companion.
I worked out the curves by feeding a loop into Bertom Qudio Curve Analyser. You can see a chunk of distortion including the portable USB interface I was using causing a spike and I had a bad line in. However, the generaly curve is right and I know which bits to ignore. I’ll post a short video of this in action at some point soon.
Got to say – really impressed Soundcraft! The EQ was way more versatile than I imagined.

and here is my EQ mapper tool.

I can see how useful this is and as ever, very happy to share. Due to the plugin similarity with the mixer (to make visual translation easier), I’ll need to see if Soundcraft are cool with me releasing this as a fan project because I would like to keep the colour schemes similar for easy translation. I’ll check with them first before doing anything and if I get the green light – it’s be another cool project for the community of Soundcraft users.
